Description

In today’s business life, experts from multiple different fields must work together in projects and teams. Seamless cooperation calls for the understanding of business dependencies and logic as well as knowledge of focal concepts. The Basic Business Studies module (aka LITO) offers students the opportunity to complement their knowledge and enhance their working-life skills. During the courses, students will learn about the ways in which companies operate and the factors that influence their actions.

Learning outcomes

After completing the courses, students will understand how a company operates as an entity and will be able to evaluate their own roles as experts in an entity. Students will be competent in applying the focal concepts of business and economics in their own work. In addition, students will be able to solve problems together with a diverse team. LITO also develops change management and the working-life skills that are identified as being important, such as problem solving and project management skills, self-direction and digital competence.

Additional information

The Basic Business Studies module is carried out as the joint effort of nine Finnish universities. Each course features highly respected experts who will explain various business and economic phenomena. All of the courses are online.

The LITO courses cannot be included in Finnish bachelor or master of business and economic sciences degrees. The content and learning goals of the LITO courses have been designed for students that are not majoring in business sciences. Hence, the content and subject matter of the courses differ from the basic studies in the Finnish bachelor's and master's degrees in business and economic sciences and cannot substitute for the basic studies included in these degrees.

Before taking LITO courses, students must make sure that:

1. The courses they have chosen can be included in their degree/studies
2. The courses chosen do not overlap content-wise with other courses in their degree.

Only LITO courses can be included in the LITO module.

The rules of the university that organises the course are applied in the evaluation of study attainments and in disciplinary actions.

Registration for the LITO courses

Students must register for the courses before they begin them. Registration takes place at the student's home university during a pre-defined registration period, which may differ from the customary course registration periods applied at the home university. Students are advised to check the registration periods for the LITO courses they plan to take and abide by the deadlines. Proper registration for a course is obligatory and required in order to receive course credits. Late registrations will not be accepted.

The registration of course credits and the module

When a student passes a course, the grade will be entered into the transcript system at his/her home university. To receive credit for the module on their diploma, students must complete at least five courses (equal to 25 ECTS), including the course ‘Understanding and Managing a Business as a Dynamic Whole – Business Simulation Game’ (the other 20 ECTS can be chosen freely).

LITO courses are organised in co-operation with multiple universities. To receive credits for the courses, students must be granted the right to attend the courses for which they have registered from the host university. To grant the right to attend a course (or courses), the home university will transfer personal student information to the host university responsible for organising the course. The data to be transferred includes the student’s surname, first name, possible middle name(s), gender, nationality, e-mail address, personal identification number and home university. If a student does not have a Finnish personal identification number, his/her date of birth will be transferred. Data classified as secret will not be transferred. Receiving credit for the course(s) is not possible without transferring personal student information.
