Doctoral Programme in Information Technology

The aim of doctoral education is to educate professionals in research, and competent and versatile experts in various fields for the needs of society. The professional expertise of a doctoral graduate develops during doctoral education as a result of conducting research, attending training events, and acting as a member of the scientific community and organisations.

The main focus in a post-graduate degree is on research, i.e. the preparation of a doctoral thesis or a licentiate thesis. In addition, postgraduate studies are completed. The studies are individually planned with the supervisor in charge, so that they support the research work and the personal career and employment objectives of the doctoral student, taking into account the coursework requirements of the specialisation option in question.

In the Doctoral Programme in Information Technology, a minimum of 30 credits of postgraduate studies are required. As a general principle, the discipline-specific studies should be at least at advanced level and the studies in transferable skills at least at intermediate level. Pedagogical studies may be at basic level.

The same coursework requirements apply to the Licentiate degree, but instead of a doctoral dissertation, a licentiate thesis is prepared.

If a doctoral student wishes to deviate from the coursework requirements, the approval of the Vice Dean for research is required: in this case, please contact the coordinator responsible for doctoral education.

A doctoral graduate from the programme:

• is able to independently create new scientific knowledge and present justified results in a scientifically convincing manner
• has a deep command of his/her own research field
• is capable of critical thinking
• knows how to apply scientific research methods in his/her own field independently and critically
• knows how to ensure compliance with research ethics standards
• knows the principles of open science and research ethics
• has the skills to work in research groups and communities, and develop activities in them with his/her own expertise
• is able to communicate in the international scientific community both verbally and in writing
