Description

The Master’s Degree Programme in Biological and Environmental Science aims to educate experts in biology and environmental science specialized in either aquatic science or ecology and evolutionary biology. The MSc degree qualifies students for advanced studies in aquatic science, ecology and evolutionary biology and other related fields. Teaching is in English and fully integrated with Finnish Masters programs in Aquatic Science and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology offered at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science.

Studies in aquatic science focus on environmental and biological processes that determine the characteristics and ecosystem services of inland waters and ecologically, economically and socially sustainable use of natural resources. Studies in ecology and evolutionary biology range in focus from genes to ecosystems. Relevant courses include basic ecology and evolutionary biology as well as theoretical modelling and practical applications. Specialisation is possible through the selection of the optional courses and with the choice of topic for the individual thesis. This individual research project, with associated courses and seminars, is a core part of the programme in which independent research and communication skills are developed and in which students practice ethical and responsible scientific research. Students in the Master’s programme are encouraged supplement their subject specific studies with courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics, sports and health science, information technology, economics or social science.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • understand fundamental concepts and theories in their specialization area: aquatic science or ecology and evolutionary biology
  • master experimental and/or or theoretical methods used in these fields
  • use their knowledge and the primary literature to develop solutions to practical problems and answer scientific questions.
  • obtain, evaluate and incorporate data in research using appropriate scientific practices and following ethical principles.
  • plan and conduct a research project while working in a research group and communicate their findings both in a written thesis and verbally.
