Description

This laboratory course introduces modern PCR- and sequencing-based techniques in molecular genetics in the context of microbiology. Research question and the selection of methods can vary depending on the year and course. The autumn course is meant for students in evolutionary ecology and cell and molecular biology, and the spring course to other students working more on natural resources questions (environmental sciences and aquatic sciences). However, students can freely select either autumn or spring course, if they have difficulties in fitting the course in their schedule and there are places left in the other group. In addition to lab works, the course focuses on data analysis and bioinformatic analysis of the sequencing results using a program package. Lab works are done in pairs with guidance.

Learning outcomes

    • After this course the student

      · has been familiarized to the next generation sequencing methods and their applications, and can independently prepare DNA and RNA samples for the sequencing process

      · can use quantitative PCR-methods understanding the principles of these methods

      · can analyse large sets of sequence data using bioinformatics tools

      · is more confident in laboratory work, group work and presenting

The autumn course is focused for students that have done the candidate program of biology, and the spring course for students that have done the program of natural resources and environment.
