Bachelor's Degree Programme in History
Description
At the University of Jyväskylä, history research, teaching and learning focuses on analysing and understanding social change. The study of history provides the tools to interpret cultural, political, institutional, mental, ideological and economic changes over time, and to reflect on their meanings for individuals, communities and society. The aim of the studies is to understand why and how communities and society have become part of historical processes that often develop over a long period of time. Thus history helps people understand how the past affects the present, and how today’s choices can have long-term consequences.
The study of history gives students the tools to find information efficiently, analyse sources critically and use these to produce new knowledge. History graduates go on to become, for example, researchers, teachers, archivists, and educators and to work in communications, journalism and administrative roles.
The Bachelor of History programme consists of core studies and intermediate studies. The aim of the core studies is to understand the key principles of historical research and the nature of historical knowledge. The course covers the general historical development of cultures, ideologies, societies, economics and politics. During their intermediate studies, students focus on the different areas of historical research and how to apply key theoretical developments in the study of history and use different research methods and source materials. The degree also includes communications and language studies, general and elective courses.
