MMT2KOK Music Technology (15–35 cr)

This module introduces students to the tools and contemporary practices within the field of music technology. Students will gain an expertise in the physics of sound, digital audio, signal processing, recording and sequencing of music. Additionally, a focus is placed on how these areas are relevant for the growing area of computational musicology, including the analysis and description of music in both symbolic and digital forms. Students choose from a set of optional courses that offer specific music technology-based skills. These courses are selected based on the student’s individual interests and ambitions. Through a unit on computational analysis, students learn about the mathematical procedures that lie at the centre of digital audio and signal processing. Through a unit on interface designs, students explore sensorimotor relationships between the instrument and the musician from the perspective of musical interfaces. An independent project course allows students to apply what they have learned towards an independent recording project. In sum, these courses will be relevant to anyone interested in pursuing a career that touches upon applied music technology, including doctoral studies.

After completing the module the student will be able to:

- record and edit music both in midi and audio formats

- use basic audio recording systems and understands the basics of sound recording

- Use music notation software for composition, arranging

- implement sound synthesis using standard analysis software and/or programming environments

- Write simple to intermediate programming scripts for computational audio analysis

- Use matrix-based programming software

- Name and explain the key concepts and theories when designing musical interfaces

- Plan and carry out an independent music technology project.
