Description

Content

The course familiarises students with the central features of Finnish pronunciation. It increases their knowledge of Finnish prosody (speech rhythm, word and sentence stress and length) and progresses to the differentiation and production of individual sounds. The aim is to first recognise entities in speech flow and perceive the different tasks of rhythm, stress and intonation. The focus then shifts to sound length variation and individual sounds. The course is based on those features of Finnish pronunciation that are challenging for learners. A central objective is that students identify the aspects of pronunciation that are difficult for them and find ways to practise them.

Completion methods

Listening and production exercises in the language lab, both individually and in pairs. Feedback on the exercises from the teacher and peers. Self-assessment is also an important part of practising pronunciation.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the students

- know the basics of speech rhythm and word and sentence stress
- have improved their ability to recognise sound lengths and distinguish individual sounds; they are also able to produce these, even though the effect of their mother tongue can be heard
- know the strengths and weaknesses of their own pronunciation and are able to independently practise areas that need improvement after the course.
