KEMA2820 Organic Chemistry 1: Basic Analysis Methods and Reactions (5 cr)

Study level:
Intermediate studies
Grading scale:
0-5
Language:
English, Finnish
Responsible organisation:
Department of Chemistry
Curriculum periods:
2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023

Description

The course will deepen the understanding of organic chemistry concepts.

Basics of the organic analytics: 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

Reactivity and reaction types: Radical reactions (halogenation, allylic and benzylic halogenation, radical addition), substitution reactions (SN1 and SN2), elimination reactions (E1 and E2). The reactions of aromatic compounds: electrophilic aromatic substitution, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, and reactions of aromatic amines. The substituent effects of benzene: reactivity, impact on acidity and basicity.

Reaction mechanistic thinking and synthesis design.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student

  • can use the organic chemistry concepts and terminology.
  • knows the principles of the most common organic chemistry analysis methods.
  • is able to identify functional groups from IR spectra.
  • is able to identify simple organic compounds based on their mass, 1H and 13C NMR spectra.
  • understands the principles of the reactivity of organic compounds.
  • is able to identify and apply the reactions studied  to the synthesis of the simple organic compounds.
  • understands the principles of reaction mechanisms and is able to describe the reaction pathway via reaction mechanisms.
  • is able to design the synthesis of organic compounds based on the reactions learnt during the course.

Working life skills:

  • Masters planning of own workload and is able to follow the given schedules and deadlines.
  • Is able to connect and apply the concepts learnt during the course to broader chemistry context and to the topics of the other courses.
  • Is able to independently acquire additional knowledge and expand the knowledge base.
  • Is able to justify and explain the answers both orally and literally.
  • Is able to discuss organic chemistry phenomena using the correct terminology and concepts.
