Description

Student learns what are omics (genomics, metagenomics, proteopmics, metaboliomics) and how they are used in modern microbial research.

Species and trophic interaction at microbial level, effect of microbiomes on hosts, environmental change and microbiome of extreme environments are discussed.

Student will also learn how microbes can be used in environmental processes, using e.g. synthetic biology, diagnostics and biossensor development.

Learning outcomes

After this course, the student

- can evaluate how different methods can be used in research

- understands the steps and restrictions of different omics

- understands microbial ecology and interactions in different environments

- understands how microbes and their genes can be used
