Fundamentals of environmental science.

Description

Critical evaluation of the state of the environment in Finland or the whole world including: prerequisites of sustainable development, renewable and non-renewable energy sources, climate change, contamination of the environment and harmful substances, threats/risks to the health of humans and the nature, and sources of environmental information.

Learning outcomes

Student understands the basic laws of nature as well as human – environment interactions. Student develops her/his critical thinking skills, abilities working in a group, and learns ways for solving environmental problems. Student also learns to gather environmental information from official web services.

Description of prerequisites

Attended BENP1001, BENP1002 and BENP1004 before participating in the exercise works of this course.

Method 1

Description:
Active participation in lectures and in exercise work related sessions. Returning a written report, and giving a seminar presentation as a group work. Acceptably done data collection exercise. Final exam.
Evaluation criteria:
Exercise work evaluated group-wise 25%, exam evaluated individually 75%. Grading scale 0 – 5.
