Description

Advanced Studies in Chemistry and Analytics for Circular Economy emphasize broad expertise in analytical chemistry and chemistry related to circular economy, especially in recovery and upcycling of metals and bio-based raw materials. Circular economy is a rapidly evolving field and teaching is tightly connected with state-of-art research topics and applications in the chemical and forest-based industries. The studies also include themes about sustainability and resource wisdom and provide opportunities to work in intercultural and/or multidisciplinary teams. The studies consist of lectures, exercises, laboratory demonstrations and exercises, independent study, online teaching, exams, and a thesis. The Master’s thesis is done in research groups, and its topic is related to the current research in analytical chemistry and circular economy being carried out in the groups. The work can also be carried out in cooperation with companies or other research organizations. The advanced studies are part of the international Master's Degree Programme that consists of studies completed in English. In addition, the Master's thesis must be completed in English. Presence in teaching is required for the completion of the advanced studies.

Advanced Studies in Chemistry and Analytics for Circular Economy provide the prerequisites for continuing studies in Doctoral Studies in the field.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the advanced studies, the student understands the basic concepts in organic and inorganic analytical chemistry, in circular economy, and recovery and upcycling of metals and bio-based raw materials. The student masters the most important experimental methods in organic and inorganic analytical chemistry, can perform analytical sample treatment, identify compounds and molecules, and measure concentrations. The student is able to work independently in the laboratory, is familiar with occupational safety, and is able to take into account different risk factors and sustainable working habits. The student is able to analyze information critically and understand the importance of continuous learning. The student can acquire information, plan, schedule and work independently and in groups. The student understands and can interpret the results of the work numerically and graphically, drawing conclusions. The student is able to report the work orally and in writing, taking into account the different target audiences.
