Description

This course offers an advanced knowledge of central theories, paradigm traditions, topics, and recent empirical developments in the field of corporate communication, including strategic communication, public relations, and organizational communication scholarship. Students will learn classical notions on the field of corporate communication as well as some specialized knowledge in focal areas central to corporate communication discipline at JSBE. In each focal area the foundational concepts, seminal publications and some recent research developments are presented. The course places a strong emphasis on the acquisition of comprehensive theoretical knowledge in corporate communication and the ability to apply abstract theoretical models and concepts from corporate communication scholarships to own research practice. Students will also acquire a solid theoretical foundation necessary for teaching corporate communication and using this knowledge to independently design courses and study modules, preparing them to impart knowledge effectively in academic settings. The course emphasizes the ability to critically reflect on and discuss scientific knowledge in a manner that resonates with the corporate communication research community.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student:

- has gained a deep and advanced knowledge of corporate communication discipline and its various streams of research;

- can use this knowledge for positioning their research within a theoretical discourse that is relevant to the corporate communication discipline;

- has learned how to critical reflect and discuss scientific knowledge in a way that is meaningful to the corporate communication research community;

- has acquired sufficient theoretical understanding to teach in corporate communication, and independently design courses and study modules in corporate communication.

Completion of this course: Independent study, Critical analysis essay assignment

This course is recommended to be completed during the first year of doctoral studies. During this course, students are expected to prepare a critical analysis essay in which they present and discuss how different traditions and focal areas advance their understanding of the corporate communication discipline and how they would update their research plan based on this learning.
