Course description
This course provides tools to use the French language and knowledge of French-speaking communities and their cultural phenomena.
The main contents of the course
I.e., cultural phenomena in French-speaking communities and diversity. Structures covered (future tense, conditional, subjunctive) strengthen the ability to express opinions and feelings.
Learning outcomes
On the completion of the course, the student is expected to
- recognize that languages and cultures are multi-layered with relative values and norms;
- understand the main points of common factual texts and web pages in French;
- understand the main points of normal speech in French;
- be able to participate in French in public debate and give reasons for their views;
- be able to express time-related events, experiences, and emotions in French;
- be able to take responsibility for their learning of French.

The course is optional for all university students. It is part of the Programme de langues, cultures et sociétés françaises.
Description of prerequisites
Courses French 1,2 and 3 or the same skills obtained elsewhere.

Completion methods
Method 1
Description:
Participation in the course and completion of the assignments. Some of the assignments will be assessed.
Evaluation criteria:
Written language skills (mainly vocabulary and structures) are assessed by an exam at the end of the course and by a written assignment during the course with a grade of 1-5. Oral language competence is assessed during the course. More detailed assessment criteria are given for each assessed assignment.
