SPTA2013 Intersectionality and Critical Theory of Race (5 cr)

The course introduces the central concepts and theoretical approaches within intersectionality and critical theory of race. The course literature discusses the history of intersectionality, its political and intellectual legacy, and its scholarly significance. The discussions of critical theory of race includes discussions of epistemic injustice, different concepts of race, and the tradition of Africana philosophy. 

By taking the course the student:

· Becomes familiarized with the central concepts and theoretical approaches within intersectionality and critical theory of race.

· Understands how one can apply intersectionality and critical theory of race when studying for example racism, (post)colonialism, heteronormativity or hierarchies based on class.

· Becomes familiarized with the histories of intersectionality and critical theory of race and conceives on what grounds these approaches have criticized white feminism and its biases concerning race, class, and sexual orientation.

· Understands the internal tensions within the fields of intersectionality and critical theory of race and is aware of the discussions of the primacy of gender and race as categories of oppression.

The course Intersectionality and Critical Theory of Race can continuously be taken in the format of an electronic exam (in Exam) or in the format of an essay (in which case contact the instructor by email).
