This course specifically addresses language awareness as integral to language education and the wider curriculum.

Description

This course considers different language forms, how to use language well for teaching and studying, and the importance of developing a reflective stance to the use of language. This course addresses foreign language education and bilingual education as outlined in the Finnish National Curriculum for Basic Education.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students should be able to: 

  • appreciate the role and range of language in and across education 

  • develop educational routines, tasks and activities to promote language development 

  • explain basic linguistic features and language structures in child-friendly terms

  • support student participation through different forms of language

  • recognize language and different modalities as cultural tools that can resource, support and limit education
