Description

This course aims to provide an overview of the cell function and behavior in living organisms using physical principles. The content includes Brownian motion, diffusion, membrane potential, entropy, osmosis, ion channels and pumps, action potential (nerve impulses), molecular machines.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to understand the physical phenomena that determine cell compartmentalization to maintain homeostasis in living organisms.

Study materials

The course is mainly based on the books “Biological Physics. Energy, Information, Life” (Philip Nelson) and “Physical Biology of the Cell” (Rob Phillips, Jane Kondev, Julie Theriot, Hernan Garcia).
