Introduction to partial differential equations. In particular time-independent equations.

Description

A partial differential equation (PDE) is an equation involving an unknown function of two or more variables, and its partial derivatives. Partial differential equations have numerous applications to geometry, stochastics, mathematical finance, physics and image processing.

Introduction to partial differential equations: transport equation, Laplace equation, physical interpretations, different ways of solving the equations.

Learning outcomes

Student

  • recognizes transport equation, and  Laplace equation
  • knows physical interpretations for the equations
  • knows and can apply basic properties of the equations
  • can solve simple PDE problems

Additional information

The course is suitable and beneficial for prospective math teacher students as well. For instance, the second part of the course Partial differential equations 1B provides mathematical justifications for results related to heat conduction and behavior of waves.
