Cooperation network course
Network: Biodiversity education network
This course is offered through the Network for Biodiversity. These studies are available for the following degree students:
- Bachelor's and Master's Degree Education in Biology
- Bachelor's and Master's Degree Education in Environmental and Aquatic Sciences
- Master's Degree Education in Aquatic Science
- Master's Degree Education in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
- Master's Degree Education in Cell and Molecular Biology
- Master's Degree Education in Environmental Science
Description
Natural forest ecology. Quantifying ecological features of forests. Natural disturbances and successions, and their links to structures important for biodiversity. Forest restoration. Biodiversity conservation in managed forests. Structures and forest-dwelling species.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the student is able to:
• identify and measure forest structures important for biodiversity, and understand how they are connected to the disturbance ecology of forests.
• compare structural differences between naturally-developed and managed forests, and evaluate measures of restoration for reducing these differences
• report research findings and place them within the context of broader phenomena
The course develops the following generic skills: leadership and development, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, interaction and communication.
Additional information
Maximum number of participants is 16. Priority is given to students majoring in forest sciences and to students who have the forest ecology and biodiversity module in their approved MSc study plan (HOPS). The course is in Finnish only. The course replaces field course “3513164 Field course on identifying threatened forest species and their habitats” (replacement of 3 ECTS).
Campus: Joensuu
