Content

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the basic theoretical principles of language assessment and how to design and critically evaluate their own and others’ assessment plans and instruments.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student
• understands the different purposes of assessment and how the purpose relates to quality
• is aware of the key theoretical principles of assessment and the factors affecting the quality of assessments
• can evaluate the quality and appropriateness for the learners of his/her own assessments and the assessment procedures and instruments obtained from elsewhere (e.g. from textbooks)
• is familiar with different approaches to assessment and the characteristics of assessing different aspects of language
• is familiar with the most commonly used approaches to evaluating the quality of assessments and tests
