Introductory course to circular economy and how chemistry can be used to promote the circular economy.

Description

This course will give an overall idea of what is circular economy and how we can move towards it, focusing especially on current activities in the field of chemistry and environmental science. The first part of the course consists of an online course Circular.now, by the Climate University. The second part of the course includes introductory lectures on how expertise in chemistry and environmental sciences can be applied to promote circular economy. 

Learning outcomes

Objectives of this course:

  • understanding what is circular economy and its basic principles
  • understanding the challenges in consumption of resources and how transition to circular economy can help
  • becoming familiar with approaches and practical activities that could promote the circular economy
  • knowing how chemistry can help in moving towards the circular economy
  • getting an overall image of circular economy research and it's applications at JYU

Completion methods

Method 1

Description:
The student will fill out multiple-choice tests during the Circular.now online course and write a 2 page learning diary at the end of the online course. The students will also perform a group work, which will be presented at the end of the course.
Evaluation criteria:
50% of the multiple-choice test answers must be correct to pass. 20% of course grade will be based on multiple-choice tests. Learning diary will be graded pass/fail. Group work will be graded 1-5, and consist 80% of the course grade.
