Master’s level seminar, which focuses intensively on the preparation of a student’s MA thesis.

Description

Advanced studies seminar to prepare for the master’s thesis.

Learning outcomes

Having completed this course, a student will

· master the different phases of the research process and be able to plan their work independently within given deadlines

· master advanced information search techniques

· be able to use sources critically and be aware of the interpretative nature of history and of history-political choices

· be able to use their chosen methods and approaches in a justified way and to obey the ethical rules of scholarship in their thesis work

· master the art of scholarly argumentation and be able to engage in analytical and constructive scientific discussion and to critique scholarly presentations

Additional information

Participation in teaching. In this year-long seminar, each student will write the analytical key content of their MA thesis (30-50 pages, on the basis of the faculty’s model template). In addition, each student will comment on other participants’ presentations and texts and play an active part in seminar discussions.

There will be three parallel seminars, out of which each student chooses one:

The Finnish history MA thesis seminar

The economic and social history MA thesis seminar

The general history MA thesis seminar.

It is recommended that students complete this course in their 5th year of study.

Evaluation criteria:
Primarily attendance in seminars, commenting on other students’ work and active participation in seminar discussions, but written texts presented as a part of the seminar will also contribute to the assessment. Grading scale 0—5.
