Description

The maturity test is a demonstration of a student’s familiarity with the subject matter of the thesis written for the degree, as well as of mastery of academic writing conventions. At the same time, students who have completed their school education in Finnish or Swedish demonstrate their excellent language skills in the language of their school education. The student does not have to demonstrate Finnish or Swedish language proficiency for a master's degree completed in the same language, if they have already demonstrated their language proficiency in the maturity exam for a bachelor's degree. In this case, the summary of the master's thesis is accepted as a maturity test and it is evaluated by a representative of the discipline both in terms of content and language. If mastery of the language of school education has not been demonstrated before, the maturity test is performed as an exam and its content is evaluated by a representative of the discipline and its language quality by a language specialist approved by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi).

As a rule, the maturity test is written in the language of the degree program. In English-medium programs, the maturity test is usually written in English. An exception are students who have completed their school education in Finnish or Swedish but have not demonstrated their skills in the aforementioned languages through the maturity test of their bachelor’s degree. In this case, the maturity test is written in the language of school education and taken as an exam. The content of the maturity test is evaluated by a representative of the discipline and a language specialist approved by Movi. In other cases, the abstract of a master's thesis written in the language of the degree program is accepted as a maturity test and is evaluated by the representative of the discipline both in terms of content and language.

Learning outcomes

In the maturity test, the student demonstrates familiarity with the subject of the thesis, mastery of academic writing conventions and (if needed) proficiency in Finnish or Swedish.
