Learning outcomes

After completing the study unit the student can

  • describe the main experimental evidence of wave-particle dualism

  • describe the photon and its main properties

  • define the de Broglien wavelength and apply the uncertainty pronciple

  • explain properties of the hydrogen atom based on the Schrödinger equation

  • describe the quantization of energy and angular momentum and electron spin

  • apply the Pauli exclusion principle to atoms and molecules

  • describe the types of bonding, vibrations and rotations of molecules

  • explain the Bose-Einstein and Ferm-Dirac statistics and their consequences

  • describe the crystal structure, crystal vibrations and electron structure of simple solids

  • descibe the electron structure of a crystalline solid

  • explain why some materials are metals, insulators, semiconductors or superconductors

  • solve simple problems starting from given basic equations

  • FYSP1010 Introduction to Mechanics
    - Basic concepts like energy, momentuma and angular momentum

  • FYSP1020 Waves and Thermodynamics
    - Harmonic oscillations

  • FYSP1040 Introduction to Theory of Electricity
    - Point charge electric field

  • FYSP1050 Introduction to Electromagnetism
    - Magnetic field
    - Electromagnetic waves

  • MATP211-213 Calculus 1-3, especially:
    - Properties of elementary functions
    - Derivative and integral
    - Finding the maximum of a given function

  • MATA114 Differential equations, especially:
    - Concept of differential equation
    - Basic principles of solving an ordinary differential equation
    - Actual solving of differential equations is not required, known solutions to cases appearing in the course are given in course materials and textbook

  • MATA181 Vector calculus 1 (can be done during the same period), especially:
    - Functions of more than one variable
    - The concept of partial derivative

  • In addition, some basic properties of complex numbers are needed, see textbook
