FIRE0021 Field-specific examples of register-based research using Finnish data, Business and Economics (1 cr)

• The video lectures introduce the student to three field-specific example studies that have used register data.
• The example studies cover various research settings, such as over-time trends, life-course studies, intergenerational studies, and studies of contextual influences.
• Each video lecture consists of an in-depth introduction of a specific study, with particular attention focused on the data and methods used in the study.
• The video lectures are based primarily on interviews with the authors of these studies.
• The student is also expected to read these studies.

• The student becomes familiar with previous field-specific empirical research conducted using register data.
• The student understands the different data set-ups required for answering different kinds of research questions.

This course is intended for students of business and economics. Two alternative ways to complete this course are the following field-specific courses:

• Field-specific examples of register-based research using Finnish data, Health sciences (1 ECTS, organized by the Tampere University)
• Field-specific examples of register-based research using Finnish data, Social sciences (1 ECTS, organized by the University of Turku)

• Previous knowledge of quantitative research methods. Basics of data management (preferably using Stata).
• Ability to read articles that have used standard statistical methods (such as regression analyses or other advanced quantitative methods) and interpret the results.
• It is recommended that the student has also started taking course ‘From Registers to Research’ (organized by the University of Turku) included in study module ‘Introduction to Register-based Research in Finland (5–6 ECTS)’ when taking this course.
