What do books, museums, and video games have in common? What are multiliteracies? Join the course to find out more.

Description

Etymologically, the term text originates from the Latin verb texere, meaning “to weave, to join, to construct.” The question is how the elements are woven together to make meaning. In this course, we will extend the traditional notions of text and literacy to capture the multiple means and modalities of communication and the growing significance of cultural and linguistic diversity. We unpack the term multiliteracies both as an ideological concept and as a collective term for various literacies. The course integrates activities of art and play to allow participants to experiment with multiliteracy practices.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the students will be able to

  • broaden their understanding of text and literacy,

  • approach texts from the perspective of cohesion and coherence,

  • see multiliteracies both as an ideology and as a set of literacies,

  • understand the relevance of multiliteracies for social justice,

  • apply multiliteracy practices creatively and playfully in different contexts.
