This course introduces students to research on the use and structure of English in locations around the world, and trains them to conduct research.
Description
You will explore the structure and use of English worldwide, including attitudes to world varieties of Englishes. You will learn about English use in various domains such as government, education, media and other civic discourse. You will complete a learning journal based on class topics, and design and conduct a research project.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the students will:
- Know about the history of varieties of English around the world
- Comprehend their diverse and varied use in a range of international contexts
- Apply this knowledge to design a formal research interview
- Create a series of interview questions, informed by academic reading
- Conduct the research interview, and analyse the findings
- Evaluate their work constructively, with clear ideas for potential future improvement
