The course investigates how people communicate meaning and negotiate relationships and examines social and cultural variation within communities.

Description

In this course, we will investigate how people use language in interaction to communicate meaning and negotiate relationships. The focus will be on key concepts of pragmatics and the study of social interaction. We will explore how participation in interaction is structured and how it is shaped by the contexts in which it is embedded. We also examine social and cultural variation and discuss what kinds of interactional norms are adhered to within different communities.

Learning outcomes

After this course, students will be able to:

  • analyse and describe the role of context in communicating meaning,

  • observe different layers of meaning in interaction,

  • apply important concepts in pragmatics in analysis of authentic data,

  • analyse the role of embodiment and socio-material artefacts in interaction, and

  • analyse how social identities and relationships are negotiated in interaction.
