Description

The course introduces the characteristics of multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary research with a focus on integration of knowledge. Through groupwork, the students will practice working as a part of an interdisciplinary research group gaining skills for collaboration and communication, leading, and ideating. Other course topics include: - possibilities and impact of interdisciplinary research, especially in addressing global challenges and other complex problems - challenges of interdisciplinary research - ethical questions in inter- and transdisciplinary research - interdisciplinary career and applying for funding for interdisciplinary research.

Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to understand the characteristics of interdisciplinary research and to be able to apply these insights into one’s own scientific work. Upon completion of the course, the participants will have - learned about interdisciplinary integration and gained tools to apply interdisciplinary approaches into their own research - learned to analyse and critically examine interdisciplinary approaches and tools and to creatively use these in their own work and research projects - developed skills in interdisciplinary teamwork as well as leading interdisciplinary project work and research idea creation to address global challenges - developed skills in inter- and transdisciplinary communications both in dialogic exchange and in presenting research ideas clearly and impactfully - gained the ability to evaluate the applicability of interdisciplinary approaches for their own research and effect of interdisciplinarity on their career and skill development.

Additional information

The course will be organised as a fully online version in 2028. The implementations in 2026 and 2027 require on-site attendance.
