Description
Formation and biogeochemistry of peat soil. Climate and hydrology as factors to regulate peatland development and distribution of peatland types. History of contemporary peatlands. Peatland habitats ecology and classification. Specific biogeochemical functions in peatlands. Impacts of peatland utilization on biodiverstity and environment. Conservation and restoration of peatlands.
Learning outcomes
The students gain knowledge of ecology, current status and global significance of peatlands. The course develops abilities to combine knowledge from different disciplines to build meaningful interpretations and conclusions.
The study unit develops the following generic skills/generic competences: digitalization, ethics, internationality, sustainability and responsibility, critical thinking, identification and development of expertise, interaction and communication.
