The course approaches Open science broadly and examines Open Science as a set of principles and practices that aim to make scientific research accessible to everyone for the benefits of scientists and society as a whole.\r\n\r\nThe course helps to understand the relevance of Open Science in relation to research integrity, reproducibility, and impact. In addition, the course introduces tools for embracing Open Science at each stage of the research process. After completing optional the Citizen Science module, the student understands the principles and practical implementation of citizen science, and can describe how public participation can contribute to research transparency, openness, and societal impact."},"tweetText":null,"content":{"en":"Module 1: This module addresses the key concepts of Open Science and focuses on what Open Science is and how it is promoted, put into practice and monitored. \r\n\r\nModule 2: This module is focused on different Open Science practices and tools for researchers that can increase transparency of their full workflow. This includes pre-registration of research ideas, documenting and publishing the process through which research results were retrieved, sharing data, and dissemination.\r\n\r\nAlternatively, students may complete Module 2 by participating in the Citizen Science module. This option includes completing the Citizen Science Panel training (https://sites.utu.fi/tiede-kuuluu-kaikille/en/training/, designing and submitting a short panel task to the Citizen Science Panel, and writing a 1–2-page reflective essay on what was learned from citizens and from applying citizen science methods during the module. This option is available only in Finnish, as the panel language is Finnish."},"additional":{"en":"The course uses Moodle. Students who take the course for credits register in Peppi.\r\n\r\nThe Citizen Science module is assessed on a pass/fail basis based on active completion of the training, submission of the panel task, and a reflective essay demonstrating learning outcomes.\r\n\r\nNote! Only this course UGSY0072 Introduction to Open Science or the earlier version of the course UGSY0071 Open Science Workshop (1 op) can be included in the degree, not both, as the contents are very similar.\r\n\r\nModule 2 alternative, the Citizen Science module is included in the course from spring term 2026 onwards."},"prerequisites":{"en":"No prior knowledge on Open Science is required."},"compulsoryFormalPrerequisites":[],"recommendedFormalPrerequisites":[],"literature":[],"learningMaterial":null,"completionMethods":[]}],"prerequisiteCourseUnit":[],"prerequisiteModule":[]},"prerequisiteCourseUnitPage":{"nodes":[]},"prerequisiteModulePage":{"nodes":[]},"parentModulePage":{"nodes":[]}},"pageContext":{"type":"courseUnit","locale":"en","title":"Introduction to Open Science","id":"otm-9751062d-55ee-3441-909c-786ffc201b42","code":"UGSY0072","prerequisiteCourseUnitIds":[],"prerequisiteModuleIds":[],"parentModuleIds":[],"curriculumPeriodStartDate":"2026-08-01","curriculumPeriodEndDate":"2027-08-01","coordinatingOrgIds":[],"searchable":false,"searchTags":null,"organisationIds":["otm-69f8ea31-de0c-3050-ab2a-e571fbab1f95"],"organisations":[],"attainmentLanguages":[],"hasSummerStudies":false,"teachingPeriods":[],"cooperationNetworkDirection":"INBOUND","hasCooperationNetworkSettings":true,"hasAvoinTeaching":false}}}
