The maturity exam is a demonstration of a student’s familiarity with the subject matter of the thesis written for the degree, as well as of mastery of academic writing conventions. At the same time, students who have completed their school education in Finnish or Swedish demonstrate their excellent language skills in the language of their school education, if they haven't already demonstrated their language proficiency in the maturity exam for a bachelor's degree.
As a rule, the maturity exam is written in the language of the degree programme. In English-medium programmes, the maturity exam is usually written in English. Usually the abstract of the master's thesis written in the language of the degree programme is accepted as a maturity exam and is evaluated by the representative of the discipline both in terms of content and language. An exception are students who have completed their school education in Finnish or Swedish but have not demonstrated their skills in the aforementioned languages through the maturity exam of their bachelor’s degree. In this case, the maturity exam is written in the language of school education and taken as an exam. The content of the maturity exam is evaluated by a representative of the discipline and its language quality by a language specialist approved by the Centre for Multilingual Academic Communication (Movi).

Jos koulusivistyskielen hallintaa ei ole osoitettu aikaisemmin, kypsyysnäyte suoritetaan tenttinä ja siitä sisällön tarkastaa oppiaineen edustaja sekä kielen Movin hyväksymä kielentarkastaja.
Kypsyysnäyte kirjoitetaan tutkinto-ohjelman kielellä. Englanninkielisissä ohjelmissa kypsyysnäyte kirjoitetaan pääsääntöisesti englannin kielellä. Poikkeuksena on opiskelija, joka on saanut koulusivistyksensä suomen tai ruotsin kielellä, mutta joka ei ole osoittanut kielitaitoaan em. kielissä alempaan korkeakoulututkintoon kuuluvalla kypsyysnäytteellä. Tällöin kypsyysnäyte kirjoitetaan koulusivistyskielellä ja tehdään tenttinä. Kypsyysnäytteen sisällön tarkastaa oppiaineen edustaja ja kielen Movin hyväksymä kielentarkastaja. Muissa tapauksissa tutkinto-ohjelman kielellä kirjoitettu pro gradu -tutkielman tiivistelmä hyväksytään kypsyysnäytteenä ja sen tarkastaa oppiaineen edustaja niin sisällön kuin kielen osalta.
