This course introduces students to the structure, regulatory hierarchy, and key legal frameworks governing safety in Finland and within the European Union.

Description

  • Structure and regulatory hierarchy of safety legislation in Finland and the EU
  • Relationships between laws, decrees, regulatory provisions, and standards
  • Key safety-related legal frameworks (e.g., occupational safety, rescue legislation, product safety, chemical safety)
  • Scopes of application and implications of legislation across different sectors
  • Conformity assessment and the role of standards in meeting safety requirements
  • Safety authorities, licensing authorities, supervision systems, and principles of inter‑agency cooperation
  • Practice in searching for, reading, and interpreting legal texts
  • Applying legislation to practical safety situations 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student:

Additional information

This course introduces students to the structure, regulatory hierarchy, and key legal frameworks governing safety in Finland and within the European Union. Students practice finding, reading, and interpreting legal texts, and applying safety legislation to practical example scenarios. The course also examines the roles of authorities, licensing procedures, regulatory oversight, and the importance of standards and conformity assessment in ensuring safety.

Completion methods

Method 1

Description:
From autumn 2027 onwards. The course is completed by attending teaching. The course includes lectures and exercises.
Evaluation criteria:
The assessment criteria may include practical exercises, written assignments, project work, and exams. The assessment targets and their weightings will be specified in connection with the implementation.

Method 2

Description:
From autumn 2027 onwards. An alternative completion method is available for students who, for specific reasons, cannot complete the regular mode of study (e.g., language of instruction, living elsewhere, recommendation for individual study arrangements). Students must contact the teacher before registering if they need an alternative method.
Evaluation criteria:
The assessment criteria may include practical exercises, written assignments, project work, and exams. The assessment targets and their weightings will be specified in connection with the implementation.
