Description

This course introduces students to the music research orientations of the department, and provides early, practical exposure to research methods and areas of research, guiding the students to develop their own research interests in line with their future professional goals. The course combines lectures, small‑group discussions, practical workshops, and guided study‑path reflection.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students will be able to

- Identify key research orientations, scientific paradigms, and methodological approaches relevant to contemporary music research,

- Apply foundational research skills through introductory workshops on literature reviews, qualitative methods, and quantitative methods,

- Analyze and compare different research approaches using recent case examples, and reflect on how these relate to their own emerging study interests and

- Describe and reflect their professional goals in relation to research, academia, and future work life opportunities.

Additional information

Timing: 1st year of MA studies. The course is only available for students of Music and Science.

Participation in lectures (at least 80 %), individual learning diary, and an essay focusing on one (or more if a coherent narrative is developed) topics covered in the course.
