Description

In the course, we will focus on contemporary issues of development geography, and development the nexus between and within the Global South and North. The themes of the course will include for example: Introduction and history of Development Geography; New geospatial/geopolitical nexus between the global South and North; Changing trends of the Development Cooperation; Transformative changes and sustainable development; Innovations, innovation systems and knowledge in Development; and Indigenous knowledge in development. The study material consists of research articles, a book, and the latest follow-up report on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. The study material can be studied independently or in a group according to the instructions in Moodle but the assignment has to be done independently.

Learning outcomes

Students learn about the relationships, challenges and opportunities between development and geography. After completing the course student: - knows the main approaches of development theory and can describe their practical implications at different regional levels - can explain and apply key concepts of development geography - can describe the regional features of development and underdevelopment globally and regionally - can analyze and evaluate factors of development and regional development interactions - can extract relevant contents from the learning materials and summarise them into a logical and coherent scientific essay or learning diary
