Learning outcomes
After the course the students will have a basic picture of intellectual property as they affect research and teaching.
Intellectual property rights (IPRs) are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of their creation for a certain period of time.
IPRs are generally divided in two main categories: Copyrights and neighboring rights; and Industrial Property rights (Patents, trademarks, design rights, etc). Whether you are developing an invention or focusing on research and teaching, IPRs will determine your rights and duties in this context. In this two-day course, you will learn how to make use of the copyright system and its boundaries, especially when teaching and making use of on-line materials and databases; and also, about industrial property rights, namely patents, utility models, and protection of data that are paramount for researchers. The law relating to employee and university inventions will also be discussed.
