Description

The course introduces doctoral students to the structure and content of doctoral dissertations through practical examples. The students critically examine previously completed dissertations, e.g., in the form of a written analysis assignment. The lectures also examine what the form of a dissertation (article or essay dissertation, monograph) means in practice.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student will be able to
  • understand how a dissertation is structured according to academic writing standards,
  • assess the significance and role of different parts of the dissertation in relation to the whole,
  • recognize different forms of dissertations and compare them, taking into account their specific characteristics and requirements,
  • assess which format is suitable for their own doctoral dissertation.

It is recommended that students take this course during their first year of doctoral studies.
