DP00BE62 Human-AI Interaction (3 cr)
Cooperation network course
Network: National doctoral courses
Available for: Doctoral studies
This course is offered through the Network for Doctoral Studies. These studies are available for doctoral degree students studying in the University of Jyväskylä.
Description
The course introduces doctoral researchers to Human–AI Interaction from a socio-technical and human-centred perspective. Topics include:
• foundations and history of Human–AI Interaction;
• human-centred and value-sensitive AI design;
• explainable and interactive AI systems;
• fairness, transparency, accountability, and ethical AI;
• conversational agents and AI-related risks and harms;
• conceptual and critical approaches to AI-enabled systems;
• prototyping and evaluating Human–AI Interaction concepts;
• research methods and project-based analysis of existing AI systems.
The course combines lectures, discussions, readings, and hands-on research and design activities.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
• explain key concepts, theories, and socio-technical perspectives related to Human–AI Interaction;
• critically analyse ethical, societal, and usability challenges of AI-enabled systems, including fairness, transparency, explainability, human values, and AI-related harms;
• apply human-centred and value-sensitive design approaches to the analysis and development of AI systems;
• identify and frame research problems related to Human–AI Interaction;
• design and communicate research-informed conceptual interventions, low-fidelity prototypes, or analytical frameworks for existing AI systems;
• evaluate AI interaction concepts using appropriate research and design methods;
• discuss the implications of Human–AI Interaction research for responsible AI development and practice.
Additional information
The course is intended for doctoral researchers interested in Human–AI Interaction, human-centered AI, digital ethics, AI-supported systems, and socio-technical aspects of artificial intelligence.
The course is particularly relevant for doctoral researchers in information technology, human sciences, design, education, health, and interdisciplinary AI-related research.
Doctoral researchers from all doctoral programmes at the University of Oulu may participate if space permits.
The course emphasizes interdisciplinary discussion and research-oriented learning. Students are encouraged to connect course themes to their own doctoral research.
Description of prerequisites
No formal prerequisites. Basic familiarity with research methods and interest in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, or human-centered design is recommended
If the number of participants exceeds the available places, participants will be accepted in registration order.
The course is open to doctoral researchers from all doctoral programmes at the University of Oulu, subject to available capacity. Doctoral researchers from other universities are also welcome to participate (Cross-institutional and Doctoral+ applicants)..
Maximum number of participants: 20
