Description

1. Introduction: types of scientific writing, course expectations and outline. (1 video) 2. Getting Started: how to move on from the black page. (1 video) 3. Managing the writing process. (1 video) 4. Research plan: brief tour on UNIOGs guidelines and relation with future writing of research plans. (1 video) 5. Peer-reviewed paper planning: How to start the writing? (1 video) 6. Selecting the journal: The factors to be considered when selecting a journal for submission will be discussed including impact factor, journal creditability, JUFO ranking and predatory journals. How the different fields of research adopt different criteria on the relevance of the journal choice. (3 videos) 7. Ethics from start: We will discuss few of the ethical aspects related to the manuscript including reproducibility of data, who should be included as co-authors, order of the authors, expected contribution of the co-authors in the paper, acknowledgement. (1 video) 8. Generalised structure of a scientific manuscript: general expected structure of a scientific manuscript section by section: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussions, Conclusion, References. (8 videos) 9. Displaying data. (1 video) 10. Organizing references. (1 video) 11. Readability and style: This will cover the use of appropriate language and terminology, among other details to improve the readability of the paper. Ensure that the writing style fits the journal audience. (2 videos) 12. Revision and submission: Final draft is ready. What is next? What is the supervisor & co-authors role? Manuscript is ready. Who should submit it? What is needed for submission? Importance to check the author guidelines. (1 video) 13. Final remarks (includes explanations about assignment to be delivered). (1 video)

Learning outcomes

This is an online course to develop scientific writing skills. While there are several forms of scientific writing including research proposals, reports, theses, conference posters and presentations, this course will focus on the scientific writing of peer-reviewed papers. Each lecture will cover one aspect of scientific manuscript preparation. The study is designed as a self-study process through which student can progress individually at their own pace. Students will develop their skills based on critical thinking of the video-lecture.

Target groups: First year doctoral students. Other doctoral students and postdocts are welcome to take the course as well.
