Description

Sustainability Transformations is a multidisciplinary seminar course designed for doctoral students in the University of Jyväskylä whose work engages with questions of sustainability in any field. The course provides a collaborative and peer-supported learning environment where participants develop both research-related competencies and broader transferable skills essential for academic and societal engagement.

The course aims to support the holistic development of doctoral students as academic professionals working in interdisciplinary and socially relevant research contexts. It fosters both academic excellence and personal growth, with a strong emphasis on peer learning and co-creation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, the doctoral student will:

  • Have developed a broad understanding of multidisciplinary research related to sustainability and its unique characteristics; possess insight into the complexity of sustainability research and practice; and be able to engage in well-founded argumentation and discussion on topics broadly related to their own field.

  • Have acquired experience in interdisciplinary academic dialogue and networking within the context of their research area.

  • Have developed the ability to critically reflect on their own research approach, positionality, and contribution within a broader scientific and societal context.

  • Be able to assess and constructively critique peer research in a multidisciplinary setting.

  • Have reflected on their personal academic identity, values, and long-term career goals.

  • Be familiar with and understand key themes related to doctoral studies and the fundamental practices of academic work, such as self-leadership, maintaining occupational well-being, project management, scientific writing, the publication process, and preparing both conference abstracts and presentations.

  • In addition, the doctoral student who has given presentation and acted as the seminar chair has gained experience in presenting topics in their own research area and beyond their immediate scientific expertise to a multidisciplinary audience.
