Description

The course introduces students to different perspectives on research related to the music sector and the music industry in Finland. Students are introduced to the sector’s structures, institutions, and actors, as well as theoretical and empirical approaches in research on the work life of creative industries. The course presents students a comprehensive overview of the theories and recent research results on

music as work, and contextualizes these perspectives within the Finnish context. Students also plan and present their own research project ideas related to the topic.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able to

- analyze, compare and critically evaluate different theories related to research on the music sector and understand their relevance in relation to musical activities within the field

- examine different music institutions and evaluate the possibilities for researching phenomena related to their activities from perspectives of different research paradigms

- identify relevant research methods used for studying creative industries

- understand the possibilities of applying the theories and methodologies of creative industries research in the Finnish music sector contexts

- communicate research topics and perspectives related to music and other creative industries in Finnish or English.

Timing: 1st or 2nd year students in a Master’s programme.
