Description

In advanced studies in chemistry, the emphasis is on broad mastery of the subject area and expertise, as well as development as a researcher and expert. The studies consist of lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises, independent study and a thesis. In the studies, the latest research methods and knowledge in the field are applied and a comprehensive introduction is made to laboratory work and/or computational chemistry methods. Versatile working life skills are an important part of studies. The understanding of the structure of matter at the microscopic level can be applied to many chemistry problems in research and industry. In the studies, we also familiarize ourselves with socially important industries and related analytics.

The thesis that is part of the studies is done in research groups and its subject area is related to the current research carried out in the groups at any given time. The work can also be carried out in cooperation with other academic actors as well as industry or expert organizations.

The studies enable internationalization in home university. The studies include themes about the importance of sustainable development and resource-wise operations.

Advanced studies in chemistry provide the prerequisites for continuing studies in doctoral studies.

Learning outcomes

After completing advanced studies, the student will master the essential theories of chemistry and especially students own field of specialization. The student knows how to analyze information critically and understands the importance of continuous learning. The student knows how to acquire information, plan, schedule and work independently and in groups. He understands and knows how to interpret the results of the work numerically and graphically, drawing conclusions. Student knows how to report work orally and in writing, taking into account a different target audience. The student knows how to work independently in the laboratory and manages occupational safety and knows how to take into account various risk factors. The student has a wide knowledge of methods and knows how to apply them to his own work. The student knows how to prepare, identify, analyze and model compounds.
