XSLX001 Slavic Languages and Nations (3–4 cr)
Description
The aim of this course is to present various Slavic languages and cultures. Slavic languages are generally presented by native speakers of Slavic languages, who also provide first-hand information on their own country and culture.
In addition to multicultural and multilingual communication aimed at sharing information across different Slavic cultures, discussions on various issues related to the concept of cultural identity - sensitivity and appreciation of the history, values, experiences, and lifestyles of Slavic people, increase students’ multicultural awareness and enhancement of critical thinking.
Learning outcomes
- be able to recognize the features that unite and distinguish Slavic languages
- be familiar with the history and culture of each Slavic country
- understand multiculturalism and multilingualism, especially from the point of view of the Slavic countries
- be able utilize their multilingual language repertoire to develop their language competency, and develop their critical thinking
Additional information
The course is optional for all the university students, and it can be included in communication and language studies. In addition, it is also one of the courses accepted for the national programme The Expertise in Russian and Eastern European Studies (ExpREES).
Both Finnish and exchange / international students are welcome.
