Course description
This beginners' level course will introduce you to Swedish, the second official language of Finland. We will study basic grammar, vocabulary and phrases and discuss some cultural issues.
Main content
- Vocabulary relating to students’ everyday life
- Introduction to basic grammar (e.g. nouns, verbs, personal pronouns, word order)
- Pronunciation
- Written and oral exercises
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student is expected to
- understand easy spoken and written Swedish
- be able to have simple conversations dealing with topics such as family, hobbies and plans
- be able to write short texts in Swedish about familiar topics.
Additional information
The course is taught in English, so no knowledge of Finnish is required.
Description of prerequisites
No previous studies of Swedish are required.

Evaluation criteria:
Attendance compulsory (80 %), active participation in classroom activities and successful completion of home assignments and exams.
