Course description

This course introduces the foundations of the French language and introduces French-speaking communities. 


Main contents of the course

Daily life and everyday activities in French (e.g. shopping and restaurants, clothing, and basic descriptions).

French language structures, in particular the most common verbs ('present tense'), personal pronouns, and number words. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is expected to


  • have built up knowledge of French-speaking communities and how traditions and customs are embedded in language use; 
  • understand the basic structure of French and be able to compare it with the whole of their language repertoire;
  • be able to understand slow and clear speech in French in everyday situations or when the context is familiar; 
  • understand in French short messages with context; 
  • be able to cope with simple, basic everyday situations in French, both orally and in writing;
  • be aware of their profile as a learner of French. 

Additional information

The course is optional for all university students. It is part of the Programme de langues, cultures et sociétés françaises.

Completion methods

Method 1

Description:
Participation in the course and completion of the assignments. Some of the assignments will be assessed.
Evaluation criteria:
Written language skills (mainly vocabulary and structures) are assessed by an exam at the end of the course with a grade of 1-5 and oral language competence is assessed during the course. More detailed assessment criteria are given for each assessed assignment.
