Course description
In this interactive open level course, learners with a background in Dutch language can further develop their already existing spoken and/or written language skills according to their personal learning goals.
The topics discussed are decided upon together during the first lesson. Within each of the different topics, culture is intertwined with exercises on vocabulary, grammar and syntax. Students can also request specific content.
This course is part-time independent study. We meet every two weeks. Students prepare for these biweekly lessons by going through independent study materials on Moodle. Different levels are offered for most exercises and assignments to attend to learners’ differences in background knowledge.
Main content
- Some of the possible topics this course will discuss: Belgian and Dutch geography, history, media, politics, festivities, language and dialects
- Watching and reading online content such as promotional videos, vlogs, blog posts, polls, newspaper articles and chats
- Conversation skills: agreeing, disagreeing and forming arguments
- Presentations skills: describing figures and charts
- Grammar and syntax: using ER correctly, forming complex sentences
Learning outcomes
On the completion of the course, the student is expected to
- be able to participate appropriately in Dutch everyday interactions
- be able to express their needs and feelings, and be able to tell about their experiences in Dutch
- understand various Dutch written texts that represent different genres
- be able to write descriptive, instructive and argumentative texts in Dutch
- utilize their multilingual language repertoire to further develop their language skills
- understand various customs and cultures in the Dutch-speaking countries
Additional information
Exchange students are welcome to the course and knowing Finnish is not necessary.
