XDOC2011 Grant writing (2 cr)
Description
This course is aimed at familiarising participants with the requirements of research grant proposals. The main focus is on writing a competitive project summary. Participants will learn how to identify the key funding bodies in their respective fields of inquiry, and to adjust their application to match the interests of grant giving institutions. Special attention will be given to genre- and target-audience-specific writing.
Course content:
- Research funding – databases and useful sites.
- Common elements of grant proposals.
- Components of an executive summary/ specific aims documents.
- How to write an executive summary.
- The structure of an introduction.
- Writing effective titles.
- The budget.
- The language of research proposals.
- Academic CVs.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, participants are expected to:
- be able to identify the key funding bodies in their respective fields of inquiry and search for funding opportunities.
- be aware of different research proposal formats and understand the key features of a successful proposal.
- show awareness of variation between different application requirements and be able to adjust their research proposals accordingly.
- be aware of the main components of an academic CV.
