WETS1043 Advanced methods in limnology and fish biology (6 cr)
Tweet text
Description
Theory and methodology of field and laboratory research in lakes and rivers. Fish biology, limnology, sampling methods in lakes and rivers, biological analyses, water quality measurements, hydrological measurements, statistical data analysis, research ethics, precision and accuracy of measurements, safety protocols in field and laboratory work, reporting and presenting the results.
Learning outcomes
Student will gain knowledge of selected methods used in field and laboratory research of limnology and fish biology and knows how to use these in practice. Student knows how to make measurements and use sampling equipment (e.g., sampling of zooplankton, water samples, electrofishing, current measurements, fish biology methods), knows factors affecting measurement precision, knows how to implement field and laboratory safety protocols, as well as to estimate the resource needs of the methods and report the outcomes of basic research according to principles of scientific procedure using standard computer software. Student will also be trained in group working skills according to planned schedules. Student will be able to relate the practical skills used during the course to the theoretical framework of natural phenomena in aquatic ecosystems.
