Description
The goal of the master's thesis in statistics is to familiarize the author with a major subfield in statistics. Some of the theses in statistics are done in cooperation with research institutes and companies.
Learning outcomes
The student
- is able to focus on a problem for an extended period of time,
- knows how to find information and solve problems,
- can apply what he/she learned throughout the studies,
- is able to define a research problem and explain its importance,
- knows the right way to approach his/her research problem,
- is able to find a satisfying answer to the research problem,
- is able to prepare a coherent written presentation of a statistical subject,
- knows how to write scientific text substantiating the statements made,
- is able to use good Finnish or English in his/her written expression,
- knows the citation skills required in scientific writing and is able to build a bibliography.

Description of prerequisites
A sufficient number of advanced statistics courses related to the thesis topic.

Evaluation criteria:
The successful completion of a Master's thesis requires the student to be able to independently produce a comprehensive scientific written report on the research topic in accordance with the thesis writing guidelines of the department. The assessment will focus on the consistency and coherence of the text, the use of literature, final quality of the thesis and language usage, the author's independence and timeliness, and the subject-specific assessment (difficulty of the topic, logic and correctness of argumentation). final quality of the thesis and language usage.
