- The main content, theoretical perspectives and development trends in one's own research field
- Participation in scientific events, seminars and/or training in one's own discipline
- Presenting one's research at academic events
- Communicating one's own research to a wider audience
- Scientific and/or popular publications not included in the dissertation
Learning outcomes
- have a thorough understanding of their own area of research as well as related theoretical perspectives and development trends and recognize the research needs in the field
- be able to network and participate in scholarly discussions in their field
- understand the principles of scholarly publication in their field and be able to communicate their research to a scholarly and wider audience

Modes of completion: The mode of completion may be (1) study modules, courses and/or training relevant to one’s research field, (2) active participation in research seminars/meetings of a research group in one’s own research field (max 3 cr.), (3) exams and/or essays based on literature in one’s research field, (4) scientific presentations of one’s own research (1–2 cr./presentation) for example at national or international conferences, (5) research-based presentations and/or publications aimed to a wider audience, for which study credits may be agreed separately (1–2 cr./set of presentations and/or publications), (6) scientific publications not included in the dissertation, (7) participation in an international seminar or summer school or other international cooperation, for which study credits may be agreed on separately. In mode of completion 1, the course is applied for and submitted with its original code. In modes 2-7, the assignment is recorded under the faculty code starting with PSYJ120-, e.g. PSYJ1200.
Assessment criteria: assignments are assessed on the basis of how the doctoral student masters the contents of the study unit and achieves the learning outcomes of the study unit. A pass requires that the assignments are completed successfully. If there is contact teaching included, active participation in the class and successful completion of any other assignments indicated in the teaching is also required.
