Description

The course focuses on tools relevant to multidisciplinary music research, such as optical motion capture, electroencephalography (EEG), virtual reality (VR), and quantitative and qualitative software for data analysis and visualization (MATLAB, R, Python, SPSS, JASP, Atlas.ti, etc). Students decide which tool to focus on at the start of the course. They will then carry out a project that provides hands-on skill development in data collection and analysis. The nature of the project can be based on the student’s own interest, suggested by the teacher, or be part of an ongoing research project within the department. 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student has

  • acquired a deeper understanding and expertise in one or more tools that can be applied to music-related empirical research

  • completed a small methods-based experiment that fits within the purview of MUTKU’s department research orientation as it pertains to music-related empirical research

  • acquired experience in writing a technical report that describes in technical language an experimental procedure and outcome

The course is recommended to be completed when the student has chosen the topic of the thesis.

Evaluation criteria:
Evaluation is based on an essay summarizing a personal study plan for the course and on a final report describing how the student has enhanced their knowledge and expertise of technology-based research tools.
